Balance

Tomorrow is the first official day of fall, the Autumn Equinox. Equinox is a Latin word also called, autumnal point. The position of the sun at the time of the autumnal equinox crosses the plane of the earth’s equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth, In essence balance.

As we leave summer behind and head into fall, many think of harvest time where celebrations take place, families and friends get together more often to spend quality time together as we prepare for the upcoming holiday season. Yet for the bereaved this time of year can start a season of grief with triggers, anniversaries, memories and just wanting our loves ones with us during this special time of year.

My late husband’s birthday is in the fall so is our wedding anniversary. This November 3 would have been our 18th wedding anniversary yet we only made it to 11. So, I certainly understand the pain that grief can bring this time of year. I would much rather be celebrating milestones with my late husband, rather than marking the dates in memories…

When I also think of this time of year I think of balance. As we leave one season behind and enter another we have one day this time of year where night and day are equal, bringing us a foundation of balance as we move into the next phase of life.

The fall can be a wonderful time to tie up loose ends, to finish something that was started this year, to sit back and reflect on what went right and what could be changed. It’s also a time to reward ourselves. After all, its harvest time.

A very wise person told me early on after my loss that it’s important to be good to myself. I listened to her and have followed this wise advice as much as possible since being widowed. So many who are bereaved spend time taking care of everyone else when we should be taking care of ourselves. Grief can be draining. Be good to yourself. Take time this fall to relax, to do something for you. You made to the fall so now it’s time to enjoy yourself, to reward yourself, to be good to yourself, to bring balance back into your life and treating yourself and putting yourself first is a positive way to bring balance.

Happy Autumn Equinox
