Beware of the Ides of March

I hate March. My late husband died suddenly in March. I’d be just fine if we skipped the month altogether and went from February to April each year.

Today is March 15th, The Ides of March. Many say it’s the unluckiest day of the year.

The idea that March 15 (or “the ides of March”) is unlucky goes back to ancient traditions and superstitions. Most people have probably heard the phrase “the ides of March” quoted from a famous line in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar: “Beware the ides of March.” The phrase, spoken twice by a soothsayer, warns Caesar of his impending assassination.

Even though March holds sad memories for me, I realize this day and month may hold happy memories for others. March could have your birthday, wedding anniversary, birth of your first born, the list goes on and on and on. One day could hold severe traumatic memories for one person and could be the happiest day of the year for another.

This is comforting in many ways. Thank goodness each day, each moment is individual. We each live our own lives. We each can make our own decisions. We each can decide how we react to life’s ups and downs. We all have times of happiness and sadness. My grandson was born just after 9/11, a horrible, horrible time yet my grandson is one of my most favorite people in the world.

The Ides of March may have been a bad day for Julies Caesar, but in no way is it a bad day for all. Get outside today. Take a walk around your block, read a good book, watch a funny movie, make your favorite recipe. Whatever you do today just be gentle with yourself.
